This qualification reflects the role of optical dispensers who dispense and supply optical appliances as prescribed by optometrists and/or ophthalmologists in accordance with The Australian Standards. Optical dispensers practice in a range of environments including optical dispensaries, optometric practices and laboratories. They may be self-employed or employed by another optical dispenser, an optometrist, a major optical dispensing company or other retailers. This is the highest level qualification for optical dispensing in Australia.
If during or after your enrolment the course in which you enrol is updated in line with the National Register, ACOD will inform and transition you into the most current to ensure you receive the most up to date qualification.
The course comprises 14 units.

Course Delivery
This flexible course is delivered via online delivery, workplace visits and via practical workshops in Sydney (Chatswood or Five Dock), Perth, Brisbane, Melbourne, Hobart, and Canberra.
Practical workshops
The course is available and opens for enrolment throughout the year. Participants will be placed in the below suggested cohorts based on their enrolment date.
Cohort 1: enrolment between July and January
Cohort 2: enrolment between February and June
Each participant is required to attend 2 separate practical workshops of 3 days each, throughout their course, timetabled based on their cohort. The workshop dates and locations are set to ensure the participants are able to fully develop the required skills and knowledge prior to being assessed. ACOD allows students to transfer into different cohorts to suit their individual needs.
Duration
Course duration is flexible and can be structured for 12 to 18 month programs part-time.
Learners may complete the program earlier than these timelines through achievement of recognition of prior learning (RPL) or credit transfer.
Assessments
There will be a variety of assessment tools used to assess learners, which include:
- online quizzes and written assessments
- observation and demonstration
- verbal / written questioning
- workplace logbook
- project / case study
Learners are given a detailed timetable that matches their program.
Admission Requirements
The candidate must:
- have access to at least 100 hours of work experience in a retail optical dispensary in Australia
- have the support of a workplace supervisor
- have the appropriate technology and skills for online delivery
- complete the LLN assessment at a ACSF (Australian Core Skills Framework) level 3
- provide a Unique Student Identifier (USI)
- be over 15 years old and not school based
Support Services
If the LLN identifies any individual need, resource requirements and the unit delivery can be adjusted to support the learner. ACOD monitors the progress of all learners and their readiness for assessment as they progress through their course.
Fee Information
Non-subsidised course fee is $4500. The course fee may be reduced depending on potential government subsidies.
ACT Subsidies
Eligible students under Australian Apprenticeships (User Choice), an ACT Government training initiative, pay only $1000, with the course being subsided up to $4880, funded by the ACT and Australian Governments. Students may also be eligible to receive the completion payment of $300 for up to 1 year after successful completion of the qualification under the User Choice program.
NSW Subsidies
Eligible students under Smart and Skilled NSW pay up to a maximum course fee of $2320. This training is subsidised by the NSW Government.

The fees are payable in instalments, with a payment plan of a $500 deposit to secure your registration, followed by 5 equal payments of no more than $800 per payment every 3 months post enrolment. Alternate plans can be negotiated.
